Introduced as a new model in 2021, the Toyota RAV4 Prime is the plug-in hybrid version of the renowned Toyota RAV4 SUV. The “Prime” label signifies its status as a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle—PHEV—allowing external charging through an electric power source while maintaining a gasoline engine as a backup.
The Difference Between the RAV4 Prime and RAV4 Hybrid
Both the RAV4 Prime and RAV4 Hybrid are variants of the traditional gas-powered RAV4, but there are a few differences that make them very different models.
Plug-In and Electric Range
Since it’s a PHEV, the Prime brings a larger, chargeable battery to the road, allowing it to run on solely electric power for a set distance before switching to the gas-powered engine. On the other hand, the Hybrid trim is a conventional hybrid engine without plug-in capabilities. It relies on regenerative braking and the gas engine to generate electricity.
Performance Differences
Thanks to a larger battery and electric motor, the Prime delivers a stronger performance with quicker acceleration and a more engaging driving experience. The Hybrid prioritizes fuel efficiency and incorporates some electric assistance with a focus on efficient performance rather than a “sportier” one.
